We have gills! and a Betta.

I was ecstatic to find some little gills growing on Arthur lat weekend. I am so happy. I was worried they weren't going to grow back. The little knobby bits (what's left of the stalks) haven't gornw much, but from the knobs are all these little gill filaments, little fingers waving in the water currents. They aren't completely black yet, I imagine that they grew transparent and I have seen them now as they are getting darker.

I moved Arthur to the other tank yesterday, so he'll have more room. It may take him a little while to get used to it, but so far so good. He managed to jump out of the transport jug onto the floor where he thrashed around for a bit. I thought he'd injured himself but it was just a bit of dust. Luckily, he jumped sideways and not backwards, otherwise he would have gone down behind the book case which would have been a mighty task to retrieve him.

I also got another betta, to go in the big tank this time, the gourami taking a keen interest but i figure I'd let them get to know eachother, but I discovered (just as i was going to walk out the door for hen's night) that he was in great distress, lying on the bottom of the big tank, gasping and when he did move I saw all his fins were tatty. Mean gourami (which is funny 'cos this gourami used to be bullied himself). So I put him in a net to protect him overnight and I put him in the bowl yesterday by himself. He is looking better today. He is a crown-tail, blue body with red fins. I haven't named him yet.

I know nothing of fish...so how does the little fella breathe with no gills?

Glad he's getting back to normal.

He is an amphibian and breathes via osmosis and by gulping air.
I'll try and post a pic one day.
